Computer-based tests or paper exams? What changes for your school

Both ways of testing work. The difference is how much work falls on teachers after the exam, how easy it is to keep the exam fair, and what you can learn from the results.

Marking and results

On paper, a teacher marks every script by hand and adds up the totals. With CBT, objective questions are marked automatically the moment a student finishes, so rankings and class summaries are ready straight away. Teachers keep their time for theory questions and for helping students.

Fairness and cheating

On paper, every student gets the same order of questions, which makes copying easy to attempt. With Chuvor CBT, each student gets their own question order and answer order, and the correct answer always stays correct. Tab switching, copying and pasting are detected and recorded, and invigilators see alerts on a live monitor.

Cost and effort

Paper exams need printing, photocopying, packing and storing. CBT replaces most of that with a one-time setup on computers you already have. You pay for a licence for the period you need: a week for a single exam period, a month or a year if you test often.

Records and analysis

With CBT, every answer is stored. You can print ranking reports with student photos, see class summaries and question analysis, review violation reports and export results to CSV. Paper results usually end up as totals in a register.

When paper still makes sense

Some subjects and skills are better written by hand, such as long essays, drawings and some practical work. Many schools use both: objective papers on CBT and written papers on paper. Chuvor CBT also supports theory questions with a marking workspace and a totals sheet, so you can combine the two parts in one result.

Frequently asked questions

Is CBT better than paper exams?

CBT is faster to mark, easier to keep fair and gives better records. Paper is still useful for handwriting, drawings and practical work. Many schools use both.

Does CBT save money for schools?

CBT reduces printing, photocopying and manual marking. You pay for a licence for the number of computers and the period you need, and you use computers you already have.

Can CBT stop cheating?

Each student gets their own question and answer order, and tab switching, copying and pasting are detected and recorded. Invigilators watch a live monitor, so cheating is much harder than on paper.

Can we mix CBT and paper?

Yes. Use CBT for objective questions and paper for written work. Chuvor CBT also marks theory answers in a separate workspace, with a totals sheet for every student.
